Stone-Ricks Farm Has a wide variety of different species of trees for the bonsai hobbyist as well as the landscaper and small nurserymen.
Most of our Fraser Fir stock comes from wildlings we have
harvested from Roan Mountain National Park by permit.
We have Carolina Hemlock and Canadian Hemlock our range of cultivants
in our climate (Zone 7, or 0 degrees F minimum), that they make suitable
bonsai specimen. We offer a vareity of tree sizes, from seedlings to
saplings 5-feet.
Our business is only mail-order . Please note that due to the
nature of our operation we accommodate on-site visitors by future
requests and appointment only, we want to be home if you decide to drop
by). We are a retail firm and do not have sufficient quantities of most
materials to offer wholesale discounts. We do not ship outside the United
States due to the difficulty of the required inspections, permits, etc.
Some of the trees we sell are quite well developed as far as branching
and trunk diameter, but many do not;bonsai character & quot
at this early age. Rather than selling started bonsai, we are selling
starting material, much of which is not commonly available. We do pinch
terminals and do some pruning on almost all trees. Please keep in mind
that we are selling promising seedlings, young cuttings, and also
field-grown trees to get larger trunks (see our
Larger or Bigger Trees page for a description of these field-grown
trees). None of these are started bonsai - but have the potential to be
good bonsai. All will give you the opportunity to create your own style
and preferences as the trees mature. Many many crabapples 12 to 30
inches and they move well.
Trees in our catalog are listed alphabetically by scientific name, with
gymnosperms (conifers) in the first section, and angiosperms (broadleaf)
following. Common names listed are consistent with Hortus Third. Because
not all of our seed sources are accurately labeled, no guarantee can be
given as to exact species. All trees sold will be the listed species or so
similar as to be indistinguishable for bonsai purposes. Our goal is satisfied
customers; if there is any dissatisfaction, replacement or refund will be
made.
Approximate size of the trees is listed, with height in inches
and ground-line trunk diameter in millimeters (mm). Of course these are
averages and not every tree shipped will be within these limits. Please
understand the sizes are listed as guides to the approximate tree size
that you should expect. We always ship the largest available trees first,
thus those ordered early in the season (fall) will be the larger ones.
Those ordered later (spring) will tend to be on the smaller end of the
size range.
We prefer to ship trees during the dormant season and while the weather
is suitable for shipping. This means we can generally ship from October
through March. We will ship from April to May 15,and late September,October
and November if the customer insists and is aware of the risk, and the
weather. We do not ship in June,July and August. Although we have attempted to
provide written descriptions of our trees,
it is a difficult task. We have included photographs of the leaves of some
of our trees.Remember that many of the American species are as good or
even better bonsai material than the Chinese or Japanese selections it is
primarily historical availability that has caused the Asian species to be
used more often. Give some of our southern Appalachian species a
try!

SPECIAL FOR MARCH AND APRIL 8-9 year old Fraser Firs from
Roan Mountain TN National Forest.
There were so many good people that have asked for a few more this year.
I have a permit to collect on Roan Mountain issued by National Parks
Service to harvest a number of wildlings that grow like a carpet under
the large mature trees. We line them out in beds here at our
christmas tree farm and replant them where we have cut Christmas Trees the
past season. Those few trees that are stunted and grow slowly and are
misshapen and cannot be put them in our tree patch and expect to get a
marketable tree.I found three years ago some of the students from the
University (Appalachian State, Boone NC) wanted only those stunted runties
for Bonsai Trees.
This year I expect to have about 400-500 plants from the bed I will be
planting out of,if you want to come by you have our address on the index
page and pull them yourself or I will mail them to you. The cost of
mailing is $3.25 and the plants are $1.00 each.
Since I have about 400 acres it will take a
while to put my catalog together. If you want to come up you can dig what
you want and the cost will be minimum.
