Those wishing to become involved in environmental issues mentioned in the June 1996 column may wish to check out the following groups:

  • The Conservation Council of North Carolina maintains a homepage where you can read their newsletter.
  • The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League is concerned with regional environmental issues. Contact BREDL at 910-982-2691.
  • The Sierra Club is active in environmental affairs and has a list of North Carolina chapters.
  • The Environmental Defense Fund addresses many issues of interest to our state's environment.
  • Contact the office of Steve Levitas, Deputy Secretary of Environment, Health & Natural Resources. His office should be able to provide information on the Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere (SAMAB) project, which needs volunteer help. SAMAB maintains a very informative homepage. The executive director, Hubert Hinote, may be contacted at (423) 436-1708.
  • Other contacts within NC government may be found via the State's homepage.
