Theory/Composition


Dr. Scott R. Meister
Dr. Scott R. Meister, Theory/Composition Professor, Music Theory and Electronic/MIDI Music, Director of the Composers' Ensemble

Dr. Meister received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami, Florida. He is an award winning ASCAP composer with more than 45 published works. Winner of the Hinda Honigman Gold Cup for Composition twice, he was guest composer at the Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival and his composition, Gravitons, was premiered by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He has been a composer-in-residence at the International Spoleto Festival in Charleston South Carolina. Dr. Meister is the coordinator of the electronic music laboratory and teaches courses in electronic music and 20th century compositional techniques.webpage

 

Dr. William G. Harbinson Dr. William G. Harbinson, Dean of the School of Music
Professor, Music Theory & Composition

Dr. Harbinson received the Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University where he studied composition with Dr. Roy Johnson. His compositions have received numerous performances in the United States and abroad. A former member of the faculty of Florida State University, Dr. Harbinson is a published composer (BMI), an author of articles in national and international journals, 5-time winner of the J.W. Pepper Editors Choice Award and frequently appears as a conductor and adjudicator. He is a recipient of the alumni association's prestigious Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. Harbinson also serves as the Dean of the Hayes School of Music.webpage

 

Electronic/MIDI Music (Picture)

Music majors explore electronic music in the acoustically enginneered Electronic Music Suite of the Broyhill Music Center. Composition/Theory majors are given reserved lab times to assure the availability of the facility.

The suite is fully equipped with state-of-the-art electronic keyboards: Kurzweil, Roland, Yamaha, Emu, Ensonique, Casio, Alesis, Opcode, Fostex, Tascam. The main MIDI control keyboard has the capability to access all synthesizers and samplers for sequencing or recording. The lab is driven via an Apple Macintosh G4 computer complete with a variety of software packages for sampling, editing, and music printing: Sibelius, Mosaic, Finale, Digital Performer, Pro Tools. Students are able to receive laser or bubble jet printouts of their scores. The Electronic studio is also equiped with an ethernet hookup. Students have complete access to the internet for down loading music/MIDI files as well as many software applications. Through the university server other software applications are also available online. Also, there is the Hayes School of Music's general computer lab lab on the third floor. The lab is available to all music students and is equiped with 12 statiions with a variety of software.

The Hayes School of Music is committed to the purchase of new hardware and software on a continuing basis to provide music students with the latest resources in today's evolving technology.


Music Theory

Dr. Gabriel FankhauserDr. Gabriel Fankhauser
Asst. Professor, Music Theory

Dr. Fankhauser serves as coordinator of the theory program and of the music computer lab. He has a PhD in music theory from Florida State University, an MM in music theory from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a BA in music and mathematics from Earlham College. His publications and presentations at various theory conferences focus on phrase rhythm, extended tonality, and Schenkerian analysis. webpage

Asst. Professor, Music Theory

Dr. Beebe holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in bassoon performance with a minor in music theory from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.webpage

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Jennifer SnodgrassDr. Jennifer Snodgrass
Asst. Professor, Music Theory

Dr. Snodgrass teaches courses in music theory and aural skills. Before relocating to Appalachian State, Dr. Snodgrass was on the faculty at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis where she was the coordinator of music theory. Dr. Snodgrass received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland

Besides her primary interest in music theory and technology, Dr. Snodgrass maintains an active vocal performance agenda, including recitals within the Hayes School of Music and with the Wilkesboro Chamber Singers. webpage

 

 

Auditions for Scholarship and Admission

All students wishing to enter the School of Music as Theory/Composition majors must successfully complete an audition on their principal instrument or voice and submit examples of their compositions. An Interview with Dr. Meister is also required. The School of Music schedules four audition dates each year. In addition, individual appointments are possible. Contact Dr. Meister for scheduling an interview.
